About
I build the content and the systems that carry it.
I'm Zukhumnan Emmanuel — Zuks of Alter. Fourteen years editing, animating and scoring other people's stories, now building the software that creative communities run on.
The short version
- Based
- Cape Town, South Africa — working with clients anywhere.
- Craft
- Editing, motion graphics, animation, colour, sound and original score.
- Engineering
- Python and Django, Flask, JavaScript, PostgreSQL, Docker, Google Cloud. Three.js for work that needs to be seen rather than described.
- Currently
- Founder of ZygApp, a platform for creative communities to learn, collaborate and get paid.
- Open to
- Post-production contracts, motion and animation work, original music for film, and technical collaboration on creative tools.
- Working on
- A deliberately small kit — the four things that survived fourteen years of narrowing it down.
Production
I've spent most of my working life in an edit suite. That includes Red Bull's +27 Social Innovators, the music video for The Real Me from the Khumba soundtrack, and Splash for 1Magic.
Alongside the broadcast work I've built and run independent projects: Circles, GiGO Culture and Hey Little Giggles! — as editor, animator and motion designer, plus promos, showreels and social cutdowns.
Most of that work was collaborative, and most of it involved wiring together the pipeline as much as cutting the footage. That habit is what eventually pushed me into writing software.
Music
I write, produce and perform with my band, AlterFAM. We've played The Expresso Show and released the We Alter EP, alongside singles including Reflections and We Need Life. I've also composed and produced score for film.
ALTER was the first EP under this name, over a decade ago, and it's where the "of Alter" comes from. Rough around the edges, but the ideas in it still turn up in what I make now.
Software
I came to engineering through Harvard's CS50 and kept going because the problems I actually wanted to solve were software problems. Fourteen years of production taught me where creative workflows break — which turns out to be a useful thing to know when you're building tools for creative people.
That's what ZygApp is: a platform where creators learn from each other, collaborate on work, and earn from it. I'm building it as founder — architecture, backend, frontend and infrastructure.
Reinforcement learning isn't only a concept in machine learning to me; it's roughly how I work. Ship, look honestly at what happened, adjust, repeat. That's how the craft got good and it's how the code is getting there.
The developer section goes into the technical work in more detail.
Working together
I take on post-production and motion contracts, original music for film, and technical work on creative tools. If you're building something in that overlap, that's the interesting conversation.
